Worldcoin’s digital identity verification technology, known for its global reach, is now available to Austria’s inhabitants, with several stations stationed in Vienna for access to the World ID system. As a result, Austria has joined the list of European nations that can avail of Worldcoin’s digital identification service. Starting July 31, Vienna’s adult population can now join Worldcoin’s global network of over 6.3 million users.
The operations of Worldcoin, managed by the Germany-based firm, Tools for Humanity, comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The project took additional steps regarding privacy and data concerns by consulting with the Austrian data protection authority, assuring that the World ID verification process only requires the necessary iris scan, collecting no extra personal data.
The Austrian launch follows a similar event that occurred in Germany. Both of these were preceded by a Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision investigation into Worldcoin over its biometric data collection. Due to government skepticism globally, the company is currently on hold in Spain.
Worldcoin’s expansion has not been entirely smooth. Hong Kong also requested a halt in Worldcoin’s operations, stating that the company breaches its Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Yet, efforts are underway to improve Worldcoin’s compliance with local privacy laws to gain trust from users and regulatory bodies around the world. Actions taken towards this goal include the open-sourcing of its biometric data system in May, and users now have the option to securely erase old iris codes.
Still facing pushback, Worldcoin ended its operation in Kenya in 2023 following a local investigation that ceased in June with no further action. Despite this victory, the company has faced recent accusations related to price manipulation and its native Worldcoin (WLD) token scamming. Though challenged, the firm continues to maintain that accusations of insider trading and manipulation are baseless.
On a positive note, the project celebrated its first anniversary on July 23, 2024.
