Twitter beta testing Bitcoin lightning tipping service

September 2, 2021 · By Muhammad Awwal
Bitcoin (BTC)

According to The Block and a report on MacRumors, Twitter is now testing the ability to tip users with Bitcoin using Jack Maller’s lightning network software Strike.

The Bitcoin tipping service is presently being tested, according to code seen in the Twitter beta. Alessandro Paluzzi, a mobile developer, posted a screenshot of the functionality thus far.

According to The Block, the new lightning service will support Square’s upcoming hardware wallet and will be Strike enabled. Blue Wallet and Wallet of Satoshi are instances of custodial wallets, while Breez, Muun, Phoenix, and Zap are examples of non-custodial wallets, according to the business.

Strike will also be used by Twitter to create Bitcoin invoices. For the time being, Twitter users will need to sign up for a Strike account in order to receive Bitcoin tips.

“We use Strike to generate Bitcoin Lightning invoices so you’ll need to connect your account to accept Bitcoin tips,” the instructions read.

Twitter’s Bitcoin advancements are in line with commitments made by CEO Jack Dorsey in July. It was implied at the time that the Tip Jar service will support Bitcoin. Bitcoin might also be utilized for Super Follows, Commerce, and Subscriptions, according to him.

Jack Dorsey has recently increased Square’s Bitcoin holdings, continuing development on Square’s hardware wallet, his TBD move into peer-to-peer exchanges, Bitcoin mining, and Bluesky, an open and decentralized standard for social media, among other things.

Bitcoin isn’t available for beta users yet, but the code indicates that it will be soon.
