The world of crypto and Internet culture has lost a furry icon – Kabosu, the Shiba Inu – the adorable face behind the well-known Dogecoin and the legendary “Doge” meme. She passed away on May 24th, at an age estimated by her owner to be around 18 years. Kabosu, or “Kabo-chan” as she was affectionately known, rose to infamy in 2010, when her owner posted a photo of her showing a uniquely quizzical expression that caused the snapshot to go viral.
Fans and members of the crypto community alike are celebrating the legacy of Kabosu. Her skeptical gaze has been cemented in Internet history, having been immortalized as the key feature of the “Doge” meme. Her comical expression, typically paired with phrases in broken English and the infamous Comic Sans font, has truly become emblematic of online meme culture.
Things took an unexpected turn in 2013 when Kabosu’s image ascended to become the official logo of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency initially intended as a joke. However, Dogecoin has since grown into a widely recognized crypto, celebrated for backing numerous charitable causes like clean water projects and funding the Jamaican bobsled team.
Cryptocurrency enthusiasts had rallied behind Kabosu in December 2022, when her owner shared that her health was in a precarious state, and even Billy Markus, the co-creator of Dogecoin known as Shibetoshi Nakamoto, called on his followers to send support. One anonymous benefactor even offered to finance “any expenses needed to make sure she gets the best treatment.”
Notably, Kabosu’s influence has not only captivated Internet users and crypto enthusiasts but has even found its way into political campaigns. The Joe Biden re-election campaign recently revealed plans to hire a “master of memes,” highlighting the significance of meme culture in contemporary society. Kabosu, the “Doge” dog, might be gone, but her legacy will continue to impact future generations.
