Despite ongoing legal battles in the United States, footaball icon Cristiano Ronaldo recently took time out to train with a selective group of fans who own his Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). The event, sponsored by cryptocurrency exchange Binance, was part of the sport legend’s commitment to engaging with his fan base through the world of NFTs.
Fans owning Ronaldo’s NFTs had the exciting opportunity to play football alongside the Portuguese forward. The training session also featured internet phenomenon Khaby Lame and Croatian footballer Maria Marković. Throughout the event, Ronaldo shared invaluable tips to help these fans refine their football skills.
Ronaldo’s NFT journey began in 2022 when he entered into a multi-year partnership with Binance, leading to the launch of his debut NFT collection. The venture aimed to offer token holders unique opportunities to interact with the football star.
The sporting legend emphasised the significance of NFTs in strengthening his bond with fans by offering them exclusive experiences. As part of his NFT promotions, Ronaldo even agreed to a lie detector test session during the second collection release in collaboration with Binance. The test verified that the football star did indeed own NFTs.
However, not all reactions to Ronaldo’s foray into NFTs have been positive. In November 2023, a class-action lawsuit was filed against him in a Florida court accusing him of promoting investments in unregistered securities on Binance. The lawsuit has faced some obstacles as plaintiffs struggle to deliver the lawsuit to Ronaldo due to his private address in Saudi Arabia. Currently, they are seeking permission to issue the notice through alternative means, such as email or social media platforms.
