Telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom has shared plans to mine Bitcoin, broadening its active involvement in the field of cryptocurrency. The firm, which has been operating a Bitcoin node since 2023, aims to strengthen its crypto-based activities, also serving as a node for the Bitcoin Lightning network.
Dirk Röder, head of Web3 infrastructure and solutions at Deutsche Telekom, unveiled the plans during BTC Prague event. Speaking cryptically about the firm’s future in cryptocurrency, Röder hinted, “We are planning to engage in digital monetary photosynthesis soon.”
Deutsche Telekom has been deeply invested in Web3 for some time. Since June 2023, the company has been a Polygon validator, utilizing its extensive infrastructure to secure new income opportunities. Beside the hundred other validators, Deutsche Telekom has contributed to Polygon’s staking and validation services for over a year, supporting the platform’s proof-of-stake consensus mechanism.
Moreover, as a recent partner to Fetch.ai, Deutsche Telekom has been in the forefront of the emerging intersection between blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration has led to the creation of enterprise AI, with Deutsche Telekom serving as a validator on the Fetch.ai blockchain. This has enabled the firm to enhance Fetch.ai’s autonomous AI agents that offer diverse services in areas such as healthcare, automotive, supply chain management, and digital identities.
